How to: Style a bedroom dresser

Great day ladies and gents! Today I wanted to share with you some variations when it comes to styling dressers/chests. At times it may seem as though we are limited but changing even a vase can make all the difference (who would’ve thought?) When I initially purchased my dresser a few years back, I was aiming for something simple, decent in size and dark. I wanted to ensure it would be able to be transfer with the times and that I could style it the way I wanted, without the dresser being the focal point.

I ended up with the MALM 3 drawer chest in black brown from Ikea.  It’s sleek, simple and has deep drawers that can hold tons of storage.

Before we begin though, first things first. I always suggest adding a back drop to your dresser / chest. I personally prefer mirrors but a decent piece of art work (either leaned up against the wall or hung) will look just as beautiful.

For today’s how to, I used a majority of the same items but arranged them differently each time. Enjoy !

Porcelain white vase: Flea market, faux hydrangea flowers, coloured mason jar, fresh pink roses, stacked books and a styrofoam flower ball arrangement.
Why this works: It’s feminine yet the books add a mature feel to the overall look. Work with different colours to elevate the dark furniture and choose colours that compliment your wall colour.

Elephant statue: Homesense, candle: pier1, books, mini candle: Bath & Body works, coloured mason jar with fresh flowers.
Why this works: Add exotic and flirty pieces without fearing they can’t cohabitate. The colours all work well together and each bring a unique touch to the display, because they are all similar in size- no items overpower each other.

Why this works: If you are going for a more traditional look, add a lamp to your dresser but at least make it a pretty one. If you have a small dresser like mine, a nice tall lamp will give you the illusion that it’s much larger than what it actually is.

Collection Space + Displays

I’m not sure when I started “collecting” the things I do. Was it when I developed an obsession for these items or was it out of habit of seeing my dad do it? Probably a little bit of both. I am no extreme collector but I do have many collections that were handed down to me and some that I started on my own. Comic books, stamps, coins, porcelain dolls, shot glasses etc.

I always said though, I don’t want all these things tucked away in boxes but I also don’t feel the need to dedicate half of my living space to these “collectables”. I am certainly growing fond of dedicating wall space, a den, a nook in the house or even a guest room to display these items…so one day it will come to life.

Below are some ideas on how you can take your collectables and display them in a unique and creative way. One that is enjoyable to look at without being too much “in your face”.

Why this works: Personally I feel this makes everything look more uniform and in order which draws the eye in. Also, if your collection is not yet complete, having blank cubes such as the camera example, still allows it to look “full” without actually being.

Those who know me best know that it’s never wise to ask me to pour them a drink when we’re out to dinner or to leave their valuables out when I’m on my way over. It’s not that I’m lazy or a petty thief, for that matter, but I am disastrously clumsy. So, as much as I love the picture wall look, and for as long as I’ve pined for a vintage plate collection to call my own, I had to come to terms with the idea that some things just aren’t meant to be…until, I saw this wallpaper from Netherlands-based Studio Ditte. The gorgeous print is inspired by antique blue tableware, offering yard upon yard of plates with intricate patterns and unique scenes. And the best part? It’s unbreakable, just like my resolve to make it mine. Soon.

Why this works: Not only do you give yourself the opportunity to display multiple collections you may have through shelving, glass cabinets and tops but it also acts as a great storage unit. We always need storage and if you can “kill 2 birds with one stone” – why not. It’s also a nicer way to display a collection that may otherwise look like “clutter”.

10 Bedroom Essentials

10BedRoom
I stumbled across the Elle Decor article titled “The 10 Things You Must Have In Your Home By Age 30” and was inspired to create my 10 bedroom essentials post. I decided to focus on the         bedroom because, well it’s essentially a space that we call our “own”, unless of course we share it with our significant other and then it becomes “our space” but most likely with our decor input.

When I re-vamped my bedroom last year from wall colour to head board, I noticed as I was writing my “wish list” of what I sought for my bedroom, that there were fundamentals in terms of “must haves” . I’m sure this list varies from person to person but that doesn’t mean I won’t share what I feel are my top 10 bedroom essentials. Enjoy 🙂

 1. An Art PieceBedRoom_ArtInvest in an art piece that you find compliments the theme of your bedroom, whether it’s handmade or purchased, a great piece of art  really adds personality, colour and complexity to a bedroom.

2. Headboards
In my “10 bedroom essentials photo”, picture # 2 at the top is my own DIY headboard. It is printed fabric on a rod hanging behind my bed as if it was a faux window. I highly recommend a DIY headboard as you are able to change them out easier (and they are less expensive) but I still love quilted and wooden headboards just as much!

3. Lamps
lamps
Whether it’s a floor, desk or night stand lamp, I feel they add an intimate touch to a bedroom. They are a decorative piece on their own, add additional lighting and really fill up space.

4. Decorative Mirrors
decorativemirror
I for one love mirrors! I have two in my bedroom, picture # 1 in “10 bedroom essentials photo” and a long standing black mirror leaning aside my pax wardrobe. They are a great choice to help carry out a theme you have in mind for your overall bedroom look and add personality on their own. Larger mirrors help create the illusion that your space is bigger than what it really is!

5. Rugs
My mom may have passed on her obsession for rugs down to me. I too have two in my bedroom, one being a decorative rug seen in picture # 3 in “10 bedroom essentials photo”. I think rugs are mostly necessarily in hardwood/laminate floored bedrooms. They add a cozy feel and can be focal points if you decide to play it simple with the rest of your decor.

Another genetic obsession I suppose. Nothing like sweet smells in our bedroom to set a relaxed mood and allow us to feel at ease in our space. My favourite candles are from bath and body works and target.

7. Pillows

Great add on pieces to help lavish your bed! Play with different sizes and colours in order to carry out your bedroom theme and just to add some diversity to the room. I know my beau always jokes that it seems like we are sleeping in a hotel with the amount of pillows I have! Hehe.

8. Throws

Gorgeous for the bedroom, living room, office you name it. Throws are a great way to keep warm and add a touch of colour and texture to your room. I tend to lure towards throws with fringes at the end.

9. Night Standsnightstand
Nightstands  are the perfect storage solution for nick nacs that most of us tend to store away       before time, glasses, reading material, cellphone etc. Choose a size that compliments your bed width, height and other furniture pieces in the bedroom.

10. A piece of nature

I always have flowers in my bedroom and anywhere for that matter. I adore the smell and look of fresh flowers, it completely changes my mood. Fill a vase with flowers, purchase an orchid style flower pot or a decent potted plant as an accent for your space.

So ladies, do any of you share similar bedroom essentials? If not, what are some staples you find are key for the bedroom?

Bathroom Makeover: Part 1 (Inspiration)

My first ever do it yourself makeover is being posted sometime either this week or next on the blog! I have decided to break up this “bathroom makeover” in 3 parts to include my inspiration board, diy projects and before and after shots. Pending how many diy projects I do, it may even surpass 3, hehe.

This will be my second time doing some sort of facelift to this bathroom. I regret not taking photos of the original catastrophe it once was, but not to worry, I didn’t forget this time. However, this time around the transformation will be more of a makeover rather than a renovation. We originally       replaced the bathtub, sink, toilet, and floor then did some touch ups with paint and hardware. But of course, I am bored to death of the awful wall colour and decided that it was time for something new. My Inner Martha bells began to ring and I’m thrilled to get this project started.
